Shower remodeling in LA

Walk-In Showers Built for Your LA Bathroom

Serving: Sherman Oaks, Encino, Northridge, Silver Lake, Eagle Rock, Mar Vista, and Redondo Beach.

Los Angeles Home Remodelers builds the kind of bathroom shower remodel Los Angeles homeowners keep asking for: a walk-in shower with a low or zero step, a bench, and a pan that won’t leak. We handle the plumbing, waterproofing, tile, glass, and permit under one contract.

Every shower starts with a look behind the tile. If the old pan has leaked into the subfloor, we’ll show you the damage before we price the fix.

Older LA showers fail in predictable ways. Mortar-bed pans in 1950s Valley ranches crack, and tiled curbs in 1920s Silver Lake Spanish homes hide rotted framing, so we plan for both before demo.

Choosing a Shower Remodeling Contractor in LA

Ask how the contractor waterproofs the pan and walls, then ask to see the flood test. Check the CSLB license too, and confirm it covers plumbing, not just tile.

Read what each bid includes. A low shower bid often skips the valve, the blocking for grab bars, or the glass, then adds them as changes. Every line below gets priced in your contract up front.

Working with us

What Working With Us Looks Like

One point of contact

Your project manager answers the phone, walks the site, and owns the schedule. You never chase a plumber or tile setter for an answer about your own bathroom.

Written scope, written changes

Everything in the contract is a line item. Any change gets priced and signed before a crew touches it, so nothing shows up on a final invoice as a surprise.

A clean site, every evening

Floor protection along the path, dust barriers at the door, and cleanup at the end of each day. We tell you in advance which days the bathroom is out of use.

Shower options

Five Choices That Shape Your Walk-In Shower

Five decisions set how your shower works and what it takes to build. Settle the entry and the drain first, because they decide whether the floor gets cut.

Curbless Entry

A curbless shower has no step at all: the bathroom floor runs straight into a sloped shower floor. On a slab, we cut the concrete to recess the pan; on a raised floor, we drop the framing from the crawlspace.

Glass Panel or Door

A fixed panel keeps water in on a walk-in with no door to swing. A hinged door suits smaller showers. We measure for glass only after the tile's set, because tile adds thickness.

Built-In Bench

A tiled bench gives you a place to sit, shave, or rest a foot. We frame it solid and waterproof it with the walls, so it doesn't crack loose. A fold-down seat saves room in a small LA bath.

Recessed Niche

A niche holds soap and shampoo inside the wall instead of on a hanging caddy. We set it between studs where the framing allows, wrap it in the same membrane as the walls, and slope the bottom so water runs out.

Valve & Handheld

Every new valve is pressure-balancing or thermostatic, which limits sudden temperature swings. Add a handheld on a slide bar so you can wash seated.

Tile and finish

Shower Tile Looks LA Homeowners Ask For

Choose tile that suits the house and your footing. A glossy floor looks great in a showroom, but a small matte floor tile gives your feet more grip.

Large-Format Porcelain

Big wall tiles mean fewer grout lines to scrub. Large-format porcelain suits modern and mid-century homes, and it needs a very flat wall to lie right.

Handmade Zellige-Style

Glazed tile with uneven edges and shifting color. It fits Spanish and Craftsman bathrooms in Silver Lake and Eagle Rock, and the grout joints run wider.

Classic Subway

Three-by-six tile in a running bond. Subway suits almost any LA home era, and it’s quick to repair because matching tile stays easy to find.

Pebble and Mosaic Floors

Small pieces on the shower floor add grout lines, and grout lines add grip. Mosaics also follow the slope of a curbless pan better than big tiles.

Vertical Stack

Long tiles stacked straight up the wall. The pattern pulls the eye upward and makes a low 1950s bathroom ceiling feel taller.

Shower bases

Shower Pan Options for LA Bathrooms, Compared

The pan under your tile decides whether the shower stays dry for decades. Pick the base first, then the tile, because the base sets the slope and the drain.

Shower base

Upkeep

Mortar bed and liner

Custom sizes and older homes

Slow cure; liner must be tested

Reseal grout every [1–2] years

Foam pan and membrane

Fast, flat, tile-ready builds

Needs exact drain placement

Keep grout lines sealed

Curbless with linear drain

Zero-step and wheelchair entry

Slab cut or joist work required

Clear the drain grate monthly

Acrylic or composite base

Quick swaps and rentals

Fixed sizes; may flex underfoot

Wipe clean, no grout

Solid-surface base

Low-grout, easy-clean showers

Heavy; few custom shapes

Buff out light scratches

Walk-in shower

An open or glassed shower with a low or zero step. Choose it if you bathe standing or seated on a bench. It’s the most flexible use of a 5-foot alcove.

Tub-shower combo

A tub with a showerhead above it. Keep one if young kids bathe here and nobody in the house minds stepping over the tub wall each day.

Walk-in tub

A door-entry tub you sit in while it fills and drains. It fits people who soak for comfort or care. See Walk-In Tub Installation.

Acrylic liner

A plastic shell fitted over your old tub or shower walls. It’s fast, but it covers the problem instead of fixing it, and leaks can keep running underneath.

Local context

What Your LA Home Type Means for a New Shower

Your home’s age decides what we find under the old shower floor. Here’s what each era usually brings to the job.

1920s–30s

Spanish & Craftsman

Original showers here often sit on hot-mopped tar pans over wood subfloors. Expect hidden rot at the curb, galvanized supply pipe, and plaster walls that need new backer board.

1940s–60s

Post-War Tract

Most tract homes sit on slabs, so a curbless shower means cutting concrete for a recessed pan and a new drain. Colored 1950s tile often hides a pan that failed years ago.

1950s–70s

Mid-Century Post-and-Beam

Post-and-beam homes suit a curbless, glass-walled shower. Plumbing often runs in the slab or through thin walls, so we plan valve and niche spots around what the framing allows.

Any era

Hillside Homes

Hillside bathrooms often sit over a raised floor or a lower level, which makes a curbless pan easier to recess. We check the ceiling of the room below for old leaks before tile goes up.

Any era

Condos & HOA Buildings

Condo showers share drain stacks and a floor with the neighbor below. Most HOAs want the waterproofing spec, insurance, and work hours before demo, and some want a flood test on record.

Permits & code

Do You Need a Permit for a Shower Remodel in LA?

Usually, yes. Replacing the shower valve, moving the drain, or rebuilding the pan is plumbing work in the eyes of LADBS, so it needs a permit. Surface work on a sound shower usually doesn’t.

Permit needed in most cases

Usually permit-free

New valves must limit scalding

California’s plumbing code calls for a pressure-balancing or thermostatic valve on every new shower. It holds the water temperature steady when someone flushes a toilet, and the inspector checks it at rough-in.

The permit brings a fan and GFCI

A permitted bathroom needs an exhaust fan and GFCI-protected outlets. We put both on the plan with the shower, so they’re in place when the inspector arrives for final.

Lead-safe demo in pre-1978 homes

Tearing out old painted walls and tile can release lead dust. In homes built before 1978, the EPA’s RRP rule calls for lead-safe work practices, and our crew follows them [confirm].

Why choose us

Why Homeowners Pick Us Over the Cheapest Bid

The cheapest shower bid in Los Angeles often skips the flood test and the anti-scald valve. We price both on day one, so they don’t show up later as change orders.

The schedule

How Your Shower Remodel Runs, Step by Step

A permitted shower remodel runs in six phases. Waterproofing and inspections set the pace, not the tile.

Phase 01

Consult & design

We measure the shower, check for leaks, and walk you through entry, bench, and niche choices. You approve the plan before we order anything.

Phase 02

Permit & materials

We file with LADBS while your valve, drain, tile, and glass get ordered. Your old shower stays usable through this [1–3] week wait.

Phase 03

Demo & repair

We open the shower to the studs and subfloor. Any rot or mold gets photographed and priced in writing before we fix it.

Phase 04

Rough plumbing

The plumber sets the new valve and drain, and we frame the bench and niches. The city inspects the rough work before walls close.

Phase 05

Pan & waterproofing

We slope the pan to the drain and wrap walls, bench, and niches in membrane. The pan holds water for [24] hours before tile.

Phase 06

Tile, glass & final

Tile takes about [4–6] days, then glass gets measured and hung. After final inspection, we walk the shower with you and fix your list.

Questions

Walk-In Shower FAQs

Click a question to see the answer. The first one is open to start.

Still stuck on something?

Call and a project manager answers, not a call center.

A walk-in shower fits in the same 60-by-30-inch alcove your tub uses, so most LA bathrooms have room. For a bench or a seated bather, plan on at least [36] by [60] inches. Curbless showers need extra floor for the slope, so we check the room before you commit.

Yes. We saw-cut a section of the concrete, set the drain lower, and pour a recessed base so the bathroom floor stays level at the entry. It adds demo and schedule time, which is why we confirm your foundation type on the first visit.

Usually, yes. LADBS treats a new valve, a moved drain, or a rebuilt pan as plumbing work that needs a permit and inspection. Regrouting or a new glass door on a sound shower usually doesn’t. We pull the permit in our name [confirm] and book every inspection.

The work in your bathroom runs about [2–3] weeks once the permit is issued. Waterproofing cure time and two city inspections set most of that pace. If this is your only shower, we’ll plan the demo day and the finish date with you before we start.

Moving the drain, cutting a slab, adding a bench or niches, and the square footage of tile drive most of the price. Frameless glass and a thermostatic valve add more. We break each item out on your estimate, so you can see where trimming saves money.

For most people, yes. You step in at floor level or over a low curb, sit on a bench if you want, and never wait for water to drain before getting out. Ask your doctor or occupational therapist which setup suits your needs before you choose.

We use a sheet or liquid-applied membrane over cement board or foam board on the walls, bench, and niches, tied into a sloped pan. The pan gets a [24]-hour flood test before tile. That membrane, not the tile or grout, keeps water out of your walls.

Yes, and the remodel is the right time. We add solid wood blocking between the studs before the walls close, so bars can go where you need them today or years from now. Bars screwed into backer board without blocking can pull loose under a hard grip.

We stop and show you. Rot, mold, and soft subfloor get photographed, then priced as a written change order you approve before we touch it. Old showers often leak slowly for years, so your estimate carries a contingency line for this.

Demo, pan, membrane, valve, drain, tile, glass, bench, niches, blocking, permit, and disposal, each listed as its own line with any allowances marked. Anything not listed isn’t part of the price, and we’ll point that out before you sign.
